Abravanel scores first collegiate goal

Junior midfielder Leon Abravanel of South Lake Tahoe recently scored his first goal as a member of the University of Denver Pioneers' men's soccer team.

It also marked the first goal of his college career. His only other collegiate point came during his 2004 season with San Diego when he assisted on a goal.

Abravanel one-timed a corner kick from senior defender Eric Vogel for the goal during a 7-0 rout of Birmingham Southern.

Abravanel played for the Vikings' first state championship soccer team in 2003.

The Pioneers (3-2-0) won their final game in the Green Bay Nike Classic on Sunday, beating Albany 2-0. Denver scored twice in the final 16 minutes of the match.

Denver outshot Albany 22-5.

"The stats show it all," Denver coach Bobby Muuss said. "We used every field player we had, and it was a good team effort."

Next weekend, Denver players matches against Washington and Portland in Seattle.
